Five dolphins were moved from the Florida Keys to Central Florida in advance of the storm, but most zoos and the like in the Miami area said they were trying to keep their animals in place and secure from whatever Irma will bring. When people think about hurricanes, they tend to think more about the dangers related to powerful winds, and less about the dangers of rising, fast-moving waters. Irma weakened some, then jumped up to a Category 5 again before it made landfall on Cuba , a rare occurrence for that island. Mobile home residents and Florida evacuees camping in RVs were urged to head to one of seven storm shelters in the area. (more...)

Storm surges also swamped some coastal areas in Georgia and SC. "There's devastation. I just hope everybody survived", Florida Gov. Rick Scott said Monday after flying over the area. The resolution passed the Senate without dissent on Monday and was approved without objection by the entire House on Tuesday night. The resolution will go to the House next, where identical language has been introduced. In addition, it asks the Trump administration to improve research on hate crimes. Irma made landfall on Sunday morning as a Category 4 storm at Cudjoe Key, about 75 miles from Key Largo, where the NBC 6 helicopter was flying. The upside is hurricane season slows down from here until the end of November, so everyone along the coasts should be able to breathe easy again in a few short months. (more...)

While there were no official warnings or watches, the advisory suggests that the Leeward Islands must monitor Hurricane Jose's track along the Atlantic . Jose's maximum sustained winds are near 85 miles per hour with stronger gusts.
