A Reuters witness saw at least four dead on a road in the community of Mati about 29 km (18 miles) east of Athens. The second major fire broke out later yesterday afternoon in the area of Pendeli. Reuters witnesses reported seeing a hillside of homes gutted by flames east of Athens. Greece has sought worldwide assistance to cope with the fires near the capital. (more...)

The pair were pulled from the sea in good health about 3 nautical miles (5.5 kilometers, 3.4 miles) east of Rafina.
