The police department's civil rights unit also is investigating to determine if additional charges are warranted. The memorial had never been vandalized before the June incident. The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks organizations considered hate groups. Overall, there 917 hate groups now operating in the US, according to the SPLC . The SPLC specifically pointed to a "presidential campaign that flirted heavily with extremist ideas" for the recent uptick in these groups. The FBI recognized 257 anti-Islamic hate crimes in 2015 - up sharply from the 154 incidents reported the previous year. (more...)
