The Book of Eli part of the kind ever prolific post-apocalyptic film. This time, the aforementioned Apocalypse took place 31 years ago because of religious war and it has created – as in Route by Cormac McCarthy – a barren and desolate world. Eli (Denzel Washington) in advance, machete in hand, determined to protect his book, the Bible last on earth.

The dose of staggering violence he inflicts upon him to do one’s breath away and provides both the essential action of the film and the bulk of his remarks. Testing the limits of gore, The Book of Eli is a message movie, and not very subtle, which – under duress – says a lot about contemporary America.

The Book of Eli. Albert and Allen Hughes. With Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Jennifer Beals.

Rating: 4/5 – go see it.
