NASA Planet Hunter Discovers Third New Planet NASA Planet Hunter Discovers Third New Planet
- January 08, 2019

NASA's planet-hunting telescope is making landmark discoveries at an astonishing pace and has now confirmed discovery of a third new planet and a handful of exploding stars in our "cosmic backyard". This means it is most likely a gaseous planet, rather than rocky like Earth. The satellite trains its four onboard cameras on each sector for 27 days, taking in light from the stars in that particular segment before shifting to view the next one. (more...)

The central supermassive black hole, which is about 4 million times larger than the sun, will devour surrounding gas, generate powerful jets of high energy radiation, and grow even bigger in size. The LMC only entered our neighbourhood about 1.5 billion years ago and past studies have indicated that if the speedy galaxy didn't escape from our galaxy's gravitational pull and shoot off elsewhere, then it would orbit the Milky Way relatively unhindered for many billions of years to come. In a case of Star Trek meets reality, the Chinese National Space Agency has gone where no man - or spacecraft - has gone before, landing a lunar explorer on the far side of the Moon. Previous spacecraft have seen the far side of the moon, but none has landed on it. It was not until 1959 that the Soviet Union captured the first images of the heavily cratered surface, uncloaking some of the mystery of the moon's "dark side". (more...)

It marked the closest ever orbit of the smallest ever celestial object. Bennu is just 500 metres across. For the next year, OSIRIS-REx will map and photograph the surface of Bennu, searching for an ideal site to collect samples. "So, we do have to get a little more information to proceed every step of the way". The gravity of Bennu is so small, forces like solar radiation and thermal pressure from Bennu's surface become much more relevant and can push the spacecraft around in its orbit ... (more...)
