The seal emerged from the water flailing around with the octopus, which ended up hitting the unsuspecting kayaker in the face while he was out enjoying the great outdoors. The kayaker was fine, as was the octopus, which clung to the side of the kayak after the incident, probably terrified and hoping, in its little octopus way, that that a-hole seal wasn't coming back for round two. At 3 a.m. today, the center of Tropical Storm Rosa was moving west-northwest near 10 miles per hour, and this general motion is forecast to continue for the next two to three days. EDT, Rosa was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was some 470 miles west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, the NHC said in an advisory early Wednesday. (more...)

Consultant Ecologist & Ornithologist Dave Andrews managed to film the whale, and shared a video on Twitter this morning. The RSPCA is investigating reports of the possible sighting, as videos and reports circulate on social media. In 2006 a northern bottlenose whale shocked Londoners as it swam up the River Thames as rescuers tried in vain to save it. The videos show the white whale surfacing occasionally. (more...)

A United States judge has ordered protection to be restored to grizzly bears in and around Yellowstone National Park, blocking plans for the first hunts there in almost 30 years. Meanwhile, the Fish and Wildlife Service said it was reviewing the ruling and considering what steps to take. The ruling ends the planned grizzly hunts this year that had been delayed in Wyoming and Idaho. In his 47-page opinion, Christensen called the agency's reasoning "illogical". The probe will also release a French-German landing vehicle named the mobile asteroid surface scout (MASCOT) for surface observation.
