The island is the first in the wake of the monster storm Lane, though at this point it appears the storm will not hit this island directly. Counties in Hawaii have been opening shelters, although there have been fears that there are not enough , and some of those opened were not designed or reinforced to withstand forces greater than a tropical storm. NASA has now released a vivid image that shows the aerosol flow across the face of Earth . NASA claims that majority of the aerosols in the air or about 90 percent have natural origins. Some of the clouds of dust seen in the image are the result of weather patterns like Hurricane Lane and typhoons off the coast of Japan. The wispy blue swirls over the ocean are salty sea spray kicked up by winds, while the bright red brush strokes are black carbon leftovers carried aloft by wildfires or ... (more...)

Afternoon temperatures in Toronto are expected to hit 31 C, but it will feel more like 40 with the humidity factored in. Overnight low temperatures will be in the low twenties providing little relief from the heat. While physical health has always been thought the most common casualty of air pollution, the study is the first to link poor air quality to cognition and an increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia . It was swarming with activity from the thousands of hornets that had been living inside. Watson injected the pesticides into the hive and slowly pulled it a part. Watson said the hornets, which look for confined spaces away from the elements, had gotten into the vehicle through a crack in the window. 'On this one, I was nervous because I've never seen a European hornet nest this big, ' Watson, who has worked in the field for 13 years, told The Washington Post . (more...)

We're heading into the new week with hot and humid conditions and because of this Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the City of Toronto. The humidity will make it feel like 42 C. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue mainly after 8 p.m. The agency is also urging people to stay hydrated and to never leave pets or people in parked cars. (more...)

One of the island's volcanoes is erupting, and the rain could still cause whiteout conditions on some active lava fields when it hits the molten rock and boils off as steam. The storm caused damage, mostly on the Big Island , where rivers raged near Hilo and almost 40 people had to be rescued from homes. The spacecraft pointed its cameras at the asteroid on August 17 and snapped the closest photos ever of Bennu from a distance of 1.4 million miles (2.2 million km). These trajectories will also provide the mission's navigation team with experience navigating near the asteroid. "At roughly 0.3 miles [500 meters] in diameter, Bennu will be the smallest object that any spacecraft has ever orbited". (more...)

You can download NASA Selfies for free for iOS here and for Android here . Till date, TRAPPIST-1 is the only known exoplanet system to host seven Earth-size planets, all of which are roughly the size of the earth. Lane weakened to a tropical storm Friday evening and has weakened further this morning with sustained winds of 50kts. Like the Big Island, Maui experienced flooding and landslides, but no storm-related deaths have been reported. Five tourists were rescued Thursday from a Hilo rental home on the Big Island as Hawai'i County firefighters safely removed them from the house with no injuries. (more...)
