According to the report, the March 2017 sea ice maximum was the lowest on record over the past 36 years. A year ago also featured the highest concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, NOAA indicated. According to the report, the total ice loss since 1980 is the equivalent to slicing 22 metres off the top of the average glacier. The September 2017 sea ice minimum was the eighth lowest on record, 25 percent smaller than the long-term average. (more...)

Last year "was easily the warmest non-El Niño year on record", said Deke Arndt, a climatologist at the NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Prediction and a lead author of the report, during a media briefing Wednesday. And those high temperatures are without the influence of El Niño, a climatic event that creates warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific and is capable of changing weather around the globe . Louca and colleagues estimate between 1.4 and 1.9 million bacterial lineages exist on Earth today. The EPA said the Cummins recall of vehicles produced between 2010 and 2015 was the largest ever voluntary recall of trucks due to emissions problems. The recall will address a "faulty emissions control systems component that causes excess emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) ..." The recall is not connected to the "defeat device" systems previously found in Volkswagen cars meant to permanently mask emissions, which ultimately lead to a multibillion-dollar settlement with the EPA. Coles initially told customers they'd have to pay for reusable bags. However, the supermarket giant has now indicated it has no intention of putting a stop to the free distribution as it believes customers aren't coping with the change. Single use plastic bags were banned on July 1. Every state and territory except New South Wales has either outlawed single-use plastic bags, or has plans to ban them. (more...)

While viewers in New South Wales and Queensland lost sight of the moon towards the end of the eclipse , those in Western Australia saw the whole spectacle, and even watched as the moon emerged from the eclipse . The Eclipse lasted about 103 minutes. The term "blood moon" was popularised by Christian pastor John Hagee in 2013 following the release of the book Four Blood Moons, which highlighted a lunar sequence of four total eclipses that occurred in 2014/15.
