During a blood moon, the moon is covered by a red to orange colour rather than completely disappearing when it passes through the shadow cast by Earth . It will be long because there is both a full moon and a moon apogee happening simultaneously. What Did Astronomers Discover About The Next Lunar Eclipse? It is going to be a "blood moon" and it is projected to be the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century. (more...)

Competitors SpaceX at auction was United Launch Alliance (a joint company of the pillars of American "defense" Boeing and Lockheed Martin) Delta 4 rocket, however, the cost to run them - $350 million - was uncompetitive. Even prior to the February test launch, SpaceX planned to launch the Air Force's STP-2 mission, which was meant to demonstrate the rocket's capacity to take several satellites and spacecraft into different orbits. - June 26, 2018

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has released a new report outlining the steps that NASA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency will take both to prevent unsafe asteroids from striking Earth. - June 26, 2018

This type of dunes is created when strong winds blow in one direction. The color, though, is eye-catching and NASA is sharing the fantastic image that they dubbed "Once in a blue dune". NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was launched in 2005 and entered orbit around the Red Planet in March 2006. Mars is now under the grip of a massive dust storm that has turned the landscape blood red. (more...)

- June 24, 2018

Last week is when NASA had contact with Opportunity when they were waiting for its check-in call on June 12. Regardless, the project doesn't expect to hear back from Opportunity until the skies begin to clear over the rover. So far, scientists are hopeful that it will survive. This device is unprecedented in terms of studying the red planet. Martian dust storms are ordinary, particularly during the summer and spring of the planet, when it's nearest to the sun, as per NASA. Thaw of Antarctic ice lifts up land, might slow sea level rise
- June 24, 2018

And scientists recently predicted that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) could collapse entirely within the next 100 years, leading to sea level rise of up to almost 10 feet (3 meters). Their new findings show that this shift in response to vanishing ice can take place much more rapidly, over centuries or decades. Their findings suggested that the mantle underneath is fast-moving and fluid, responding rapidly as the heavy weight of ice is removed to push the bedrock upward very quickly, ... (more...)
Estimated 230,000 gallons of oil spilled Estimated 230,000 gallons of oil spilled
- June 24, 2018

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds plans a tour of the state's flood-ravaged counties Saturday as the cleanup moves forward at the site of a train derailment and oil spill along the swollen waters of the Rock River. The derailment also caused concern downstream, including as far south as Omaha, about 150 miles from the derailment site. The Rock River joins the Big Sioux River before merging into the Missouri River at Sioux City. (more...)

- June 24, 2018

As of NASA's latest update on Mars, on June 20, this dust storm had grown to completely wrap around the planet! Ground controllers last received a signal from Opportunity on June 10, and engineers believe the rover tripped a low-power level and went into sleep mode, waiting for its batteries to charge sufficiently to radio engineers on Earth. Can Einstein's biggest theory be proven on the grandest of scales? Can Einstein's biggest theory be proven on the grandest of scales?
- June 23, 2018

While this lensing effect of whole galaxies has occasionally been put to practical use, nobody had measured the phenomenon with a view to put a precise figure on the absolute curvature they produced. Since then GR has passed a series of tests within the Solar System , but there have been no highly precise tests of GR on large astronomical scales . (more...)

Preparing for asteroids from above Preparing for asteroids from above
- June 22, 2018

In 2016, NASA opened a new office to track asteroids and comets that come too close to Earth , known as the Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO). What is hard to detect are rocks that have already zipped past the sun and are heading out of the solar system, approaching from the day side. A giant space rock wiped out the dinosaurs when it smacked into Mexico's Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago. (more...)

- June 22, 2018

Researchers have just revealed the last vestiges of matter that belongs to this universe we are now inhabiting. The finding is a major step for astrophysics. In 2012, Shull and Charles Danforth, a research associate at CU Boulder , proposed the possibilities for the baryons to be in a web-like pattern in space known as the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), which is a wild terrain. SpaceX wins US Air Force contract for Falcon Heavy launch
- June 22, 2018

The nearly knee-jerk certification of Falcon Heavy for USAF launches makes for an extraordinary contrast when compared with the certification of SpaceX's Falcon 9 workhorse rocket, a tedious political minefield that took more than two years, led SpaceX to (successfully) sue the federal government, and forced the Air Force to critically reexamine its internal processes after they delayed SpaceX's certification by six or more months.
