Mars opposition: Red Planet set for awesome close encounter with Earth
- June 18, 2018

This clearly wasn't true, because Mars is only half the size of Earth and is about 34 million miles away. During opposition, Mars is especially photogenic because it can be seen fully illuminated by the Sun as viewed from Earth. Yet the orbits of both planets are slightly tilted, and follow different paths. Perihelic opposition occurs only once every 15 to 17 years, when Earth's and Mars' orbits align to bring the two planets close together, according to Nasa. (more...)
