The farmers also used tons of onions, wood and rubble to obstruct the roadways. The move came after the French energy giant Total chose to use a cheaper, imported palm oil at its biofuel plant. Total's initiative to import palm oil for its biofuel plant was just "the last straw", the representative added. Palm oil is cheaper than rapeseed oil as a feedstock for biodiesel and French farmers say its growing use has added to their long-standing competitive disadvantage because of high ... (more...)
Forecasters tracking disturbed weather in Caribbean, little threat to us Forecasters tracking disturbed weather in Caribbean, little threat to us
- June 13, 2018

This area of disturbed weather is expected to move westward over Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula during the next couple of days, and little, if any, development is expected during that time. A system has to have a closed center of circulation and winds of at least 39 miles per hour to be considered a tropical storm and get a name. We will continue to monitor the progress of this disturbance in the WGNO Weather Center and continue to bring you updates throughout the week on-air and ... (more...)

Explainer: Indian scientists discover exoplanet 600 light years from Earth
- June 11, 2018

The surface temperature of the planet was recorded around 600 degree Celsius due to its close proximity to the host star. The team found the planet to be smaller in size than Saturn and bigger than Neptune. Hence the planet will be known as EPIC 211945201b or K2-236b. It was designed by the members of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Division of PRL. Very few such spectrographs exist around the world (mostly in the U.S. (more...)

A further seven out of nine samples taken by Greenpeace were found to have detectable concentrations of persistent chemicals known as PFAs or PFCs, which may have come from the atmosphere. "The reality of how bad our plastic pollution problem has become is both painful and shocking". Analysis now shows that microplastics and chemicals were present, respectively, in the water and snow samples that we took in the Antarctic during our recent expedition . (more...)

Season's 1st tropical storm forms in eastern Pacific Season's 1st tropical storm forms in eastern Pacific
- June 08, 2018

Some places in Houston got roughly a foot of rain per day as the storm crawled ashore. This isn't about how powerful a storm's winds are, just how fast it chugs along. Kossin's work was based on details of nearly 70 years' worth of storms, but he made no attempt to determine what was causing the slowdown. Older data on location, and thus movement, are more reliable, Kossin said. (more...)
Collective gravity, not Planet Nine, may explain the orbits of ‘detached objects’
- June 08, 2018

This means Sedna's orbit can transition from being relatively normal to appearing to be detached from our solar system because of a multitude of interactions with the gravity of smaller bodies. "They are what's causing this detachment, and not an unseen ninth planet", study lead author Jacob Fleisig, an undergraduate astrophysicist at the university, said during the conference. (more...)
