Almost 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were diagnosed in 2017, surpassing the 2016 record by 200,000. "Sadly, it's not a surprising trend", said Rob Stephenson, a professor and director of the Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities at the University of MI in Ann Arbor, who was not involved in the new CDC research. For example, having one "standard drink" (10 grams of alcohol, equivalent to a small beer or glass of wine) per day can increase your risk of developing at least one of two dozen health problems but about 0.5 per cent, the study found. The first case, discovered earlier this year, was in the Southern Health-Santé Sud region. The Department of Public Health said Friday that none of the cases were fatal, though two required hospitalization. A single bite by a Culex tarsalis can expose a person to West Nile virus. Severe symptoms include a severe headache, high fever, mental confusion, muscle weakness, coma or paralysis. (more...)
