GSK is hoping the new approach allows it to compete in a more effective manner against USA drug maker Gilead Sciences that dominates the HIV market of $26 billion per year. Results showed the two-drug injectable option met the primary endpoint for non-inferiority in terms of viral loads in the blood, while overall safety, virologic response and drug resistance results for the injectable regimen were also consistent with results from the phase II studies. But city officials said initial testing found no opioids in the K2 it tested. People on and around the historic New Haven Green near Yale University began falling ill shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, and the overdoses continued into this morning. There have been mixed reports regarding the possibility that the drugs may have been laced with an opioid. Just 2mg of fentanyl - the equivalent of a few grains of table salt - is a lethal dosage for most people, and even exposure can cause a fatal reaction, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The overdoses were concentrated on the New Haven Green but because it's now dark the incident is beginning to branch out to different parts of the city, where more people are being found, police said. The DEA has also been called in to assist in the investigation. 'It is taking people out very quickly, people having respiratory failure. The overdoses follow a similar outbreak at the same park on July 4, when more than a dozen people were treated. (more...)
