While international studies warn about the health risks of this component of plastic food policies and associations are urging the government to act.
For policies and associations, we must act now. For the French Agency for Food Safety (AFSSA), this is the moment of “subtle effects” of “red flags” to check. The subject of their dispute? Bisphenol A, chemical compound found in plastic food that has been discussed for several years.
The AFSSA issued this Friday’s report on newcompetencies international studies on the Bisphenol A (BPA). While in 2008 it had found no risk, AFSSA backtracked. She announced that she will now “continue his work of expertise” and recommends “to avoid excessive heat to the food temperature” contained in bottles containing BPA or in containers made of polycarbonate. But the practice is to heat the bottles in the microwave.
The measure does not satisfy. Gérard Bapt, MP PS Haute-Garonne, and André Cicolella, spokesman Environmental Health Network, Expressed regret on Friday that, while acknowledging a problem with Bisphenol A, AFSSA did not bear the consequences. Gerard Bapt has already banned the marketing of baby bottles containing BPA in the small town of Saint-Jean (Haute-Garonne) where he is mayor. He feels there is now “urgent” and stressed that the ball was now “in the camp of the political decision.”
National Secretary GreensCecile Duflot, also reiterated his request to withdraw all bottles containing BPA and recalled in a statement that Canada has banned the component since 2008.
Pressed to act by the New Member Center Jean-Christophe Lagarde in April 2009, the Minister of Health had responded: “The Canadian authorities have decided the ban under pressure from public opinion, without that decision, however, rests on no serious scientific study. ” The latest editions are they going to change his position?
