Serena Williams loses to Simona Halep in Wimbledon women's final

Duchess of Cambridge meets from left junior players Kamilla Bartone from Latvia Oksana Selekmeteva from Russia Polina Kudermetova from Russia and Giulia Morlet from France ahead of the Women's Final

She joked at various points over the fortnight about wanting to become a lifetime member of the All England Club, one of the many perks that come with winning, but it was clear when she wore the membership pin in her news conference after the victory that the distinction truly meant something to her.

But despite the odds being in her favor, Williams told reporters on Friday she only focused on the one time she lost to Halep. When someone plays lights out, there's really not much you can do.

Williams hasn't won a major title since beating her sister, Venus, at the 2017 Australian Open. She got here by bulldozing past Barbora Strycova 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals, showing off conditioning and shot-making she hadn't previously displayed this year.

Despite the loss, Williams - who got emotional - remained positive, telling the crowd at the time, "It was such an wonderful tournament for me". But I just concentrated on doing my best. "I still work hard for every day, every match, every tournament".

Her performance and steeliness were a stark contrast from Williams' struggles and passion.

Last year, Williams lost the Ladies' singles championship at Wimbledon to German player Angelique Kerber.

The two players have matched up 10 times in the past, with Williams winning nine of those encounters.

With last year's French Open, her first grand slam title, under her belt, Simona Halep decided that 2019 would be "a chill year".

"Well, I had nerves. I'm very sure that was the best match of my life". But I had no time for emotions and just came out and tried my best. Donald Trump Escalates War On Social Media At White House 'Summit'
CNN's complaints had already resulted in the White House disinviting Ben Garrison , a web cartoonist and Trump supporter. Unfortunately, social media companies don't always do a good job of explaining why users were banned.

Halep received those comments and said she will take them on board for future reference in more grand slam finals.

Since returning to tennis, Williams has dealt with injuries but still managed to remain among the game's elite.

"I've just got to keep fighting, keep trying", she said.

Halep also had to believe she could conquer the grass, which she admitted in previous rounds of the tournament, she was uncomfortable with.

Halep tracked down everything, as is her wont.

Halep 27, raced into a 4-0 lead in the first set, securing a double break of serve as the Romanian made an inspired start on Centre Court.

It took 56 minutes into the biggest match of Simona Halep's career for her legs to go finally wobbly. Not only is he picking the victor, he's also betting on how many sets it goes and the exact score of the first set.

Instead, her game fell apart in a hailstorm of 26 unforced errors.

Williams, in stark contrast, came out looking a bit tight, short-arming shots and accumulating nine unforced errors before conjuring up a single victor.
