Police launch probe into UK Ambassador's email leak

Jeremy Hunt said he was ‘disappointed’ at Mr Johnson’s failure to support the ambassador

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he defended "to the hilt" the right of the press to publish leaks if they "judge them to be in the public interest".

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday offered good wishes to Britain's former ambassador to Washington, Kim Darroch, who resigned this week after stinging criticism from the Republican president following leaked diplomatic cables.

Sir Kim quit his post amid diplomatic furore, after memos he wrote which criticised the Trump administration were published.

Johnson was unable to meet with Trump, but held a sit-down with Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton.

Britain's trade minister Liam Fox told reporters on Wednesday that the leaking of Darroch's confidential memos was an attempt to damage either the relationship between Britain and the United States or the envoy himself.

There were bitter divisions within the Trump White House, saying euphemistically that administration officials would get into "knife fights".

The deal had been previously struck by Trump's predecessor Barack Obama and a leaked memo now claims that Trump may have taken the decision against Tehran just to spike the former US President.

Basu said journalists and publishers could be in breach of the law if they published further details from the memos.

The US President branded Sir Kim a "very stupid guy" and said his administration would no longer cooperate with him.

In a statement, the London Metropolitan police's assistant commissioner, Neil Basu, said that "given the widely reported consequences of that leak", there had been "damage caused to United Kingdom worldwide relations" and that there "would be clear public interest in bringing the person or people responsible to justice".

Sir Kim announced on Wednesday he was resigning, saying his position had become "impossible" following the leak of his dispatches in which he described Donald Trump's White House as "inept" and "dysfunctional".

The government launched an internal Whitehall inquiry into the publication following the reports.

His rival, Mr Johnson, said it was correct the person responsible for the leak was "hunted down and prosecuted" but it was wrong for police to target the media.

The LBC presenter hit back at Scotland Yard's warning to newspapers not to publish anymore of the leak after launching a criminal investigation.

The statement appeared timed to prevent Sunday newspapers from publishing more leaked memos.

"We convinced the USA president [to exit the deal] and I had to stand up against the whole world and come out against this agreement", Netanyahu said in a video aired in July 2018 by Israel's Kan public broadcaster.

In response, a Foreign Office spokesman called it a "totally unacceptable leak" of "sensitive material" and called for the source of the leak to "face the consequences of their actions".
