British police to investigate leak of ambassador's memos

UK police investigate Kim Darroch cables - CNN

Last week, Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper published memos from Kim Darroch in which he described Donald Trump's administration as "inept" and "dysfunctional", prompting an angry response from the USA president and causing the envoy to announce his resignation.

"I am satisfied that there has been damage caused to United Kingdom global relations, and there would be clear public interest in bringing the person or people responsible to justice", Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said in a statement announcing the move.

Basu addressed the person responsible for the leak directly, saying: "The impact of what you have done is obvious".

"The publication of these specific documents, now knowing they may be a breach of the OSA, could also constitute a criminal offence and one that carries no public interest defence", said Neil Basu, who heads the investigation as chief of counter-terrorism unit.

The Mail also published further memos from Darroch, defying a police warning that media which did so could be committing a criminal act.

"However, you for the time being are additionally liable for diverting busy detectives from endeavor their core mission".

He urged whoever was responsible to turn themselves in and "face the consequences".

A live ITV event on 9 July brought the two remaining contenders to replace outgoing UK Prime Minister Theresa May - Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt - together to thrash it out over such issues as Brexit and the Kim Darroch leak, as they seek to win over the Conservative votes required to propel them to 10 Downing Street.

The leak revealed that Darroch had labelled United States President Donald Trump as "insecure", "inept", and "incompetent" in the secret memos sent back to London.

Johnson said Darroch had not watched the debate but had heard an inaccurate account of what was said.

"But I defend to the hilt the right of the press to publish those leaks if they receive them and judge them to be in the public interest: that is their job".

"(Darroch) said that what somebody had relayed to him had certainly been a factor in his resignation", he told BBC television in a testy interview.

Darroch stepped down from his role on Wednesday.

Trump had always been critical of the deal and withdrew the United States on May 8, 2018.

"We convinced the USA president [to exit the deal] and I had to stand up against the whole world and come out against this agreement", Netanyahu said in a video aired in July 2018 by Israel's Kan public broadcaster.

Johnson pointedly refused to back Darroch during the televised debate on Tuesday, leading to accusations from fellow Conservative Party MPs that he had thrown the ambassador "under the bus" in order to bolster his own ties with Trump.

"Some people just told me. he actually said very good things about me", Trump said.

"It can not be conceivably right that newspapers or any other media organization publishing such material should face prosecution", Johnson, the frontrunner, said.
