Siberian Instagramers use toxic turquoise lake to get the likes

People have been flocking to this Siberian lake for its beauty but it's actually a dumping ground for a power plant

"WE ESPECIALLY REQUEST THAT IN THE PURSUIT OF SELFIES YOU DON'T FALL IN THE ASH DUMP", the power plant's operator, Siberian Generating Company, said in an all-caps warning shared to the Russian social networking site VK in June. "It is not poisonous", the company said, according to the Times, noting that while "the radiation level is normal" it has a "high pH value from the coal ash that is pumped into it" and "can cause allergic reactions".

Search the "ТЭЦ-5" location tag on Instagram, and you'll be flooded with picturesque shots of bright blue water, couples taking their wedding photos, yoga poses and even a few people on paddle boards.

But despite warnings that the artificial pond contains risky calcium salts and other metal oxides, it has remained a popular site for selfies, wedding parties and scantily clad photoshoots.

Some users joked about the taste of the water as "chalky" or "sweet", though it was not clear if they were being serious.

The company also warned visitors that the bottom of the lake is so muddy that getting out "is nearly impossible".

Thanks to its social media star status, the lake even has its own Instagram account: @maldives_nsk.

Some people will do anything to take the flawless Instagram photo and that includes traveling to a polluted waste sit e.

People are flocking to a polluted dump site in Russian Federation to take the flawless photo.

Like Zheleznova, most people respected the warnings, choosing to take their pictures on shore.

Photos of the vibrant lake are brightening up Instagram influencers' feeds, but it's not as wholesome as it seems.

"The next morning, my legs turned slightly red and itched for two days", the man wrote.

The Siberian Generating Company warned against people swimming in the water.

It is not a lake at all, merely the result of calcium salts and other metal oxides from the nearby thermal power station, which provides energy to the city of Novosibirsk. Because of this, contact with skin can cause an allergic reaction. It is the largest of its kind in Siberia, according to the Guardian. "This didn't stop some Russians to organize whole picnics by the lake".
