Huawei calls on USA to lift export restrictions

Huawei calls on US to lift export restriction...

The move clarifies President Donald Trump's remarks that he would allow USA companies to resume supplying some of their products to Huawei, after meeting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Osaka, Japan last month.

On Friday Liang Hua reiterated a call on the United States to revise its "unjust and unfair" decision to add Huawei, the biggest producer of network equipment used by phone companies, to a blacklist restricting exports.

Trump promised last month to allow some sales to Huawei but said it stays on the "entity list". "Actually, we believe our listing on the blacklist should be lifted completely".

Huawei looks to launch its own smartphone operating system as early as this fall to replace Android OS, which Google may be barred from supporting under the US restrictions.

Like Trump and other high-level US officials, Ross did not specify a time frame or elaborate on what constitutes a national security threat.

Liang also said that Hongmeng was meant for Internet of Things (IoT) applications and that Huawei still prefers Google's Android for smartphones. "Of course, if America doesn't let us use it, then might we in the future develop our own Hongmeng as our cellphone operating system?"

Following through with plans to allow US companies to continue doing business with Huawei, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced that "to implement the president's G20 summit directive two weeks ago, [the Department of] Commerce will issue licenses where there is no threat to US national security".

Washington will allow Huawei to license "commodity chip sets" and widely available software and tools so long as they don't pose a risk to US national security or foreign policy interests, the top American diplomat for cybersecurity, Robert Strayer, told reporters on Thursday.

It turns out that's what Huawei calls it too, but the company just said that it wants to keep using the real Android on its smartphones.
