All four major banks have confirmed "sporadic outages" of services including ATM and Eftpos access across the country, with fingers increasingly being pointed at the country's largest telco Telstra. "We're sorry for the impact and inconvenience caused", the spokesperson said.

A Westpac spokesperson told Business Insider Australia that the bank is also facing outages of its ATM and Eftpos services, saying the issue is known to be affecting the Sydney metropolitan area, particularly the central business district. "There is no need to call us if you are experiencing problems with these services".

Caltex said its EFTPOS payments were being affected; Woolworths said electronic payments were being disrupted; while Australia Post said EFTPOS payments over $100 and other banking services were on the fritz, while withdrawals under $100 and all deposits were still working. "We apologise and thank you for your patience today as we worked to restore services", the CBA tweeted.

Telstra has acknowledged it is suffering an outage that has taken out some of the essentials of 21st century Australian life: ATMs and Eftpos terminals. We'll keep you updated as we know more.

"We are aware of an issue affecting some of our services", CBA said on Twitter.

"Due to this issue, we are experiencing higher than normal calls into our call centre".
