Turkey rejects Greek, EU claims that drilling off Cyprus illegitimate

Turkey rejects EU claims that drilling off Cyprus is illegitimate

Soon after, a second drilling vessel, "Yavuz", arrived off the island's northeastern coast and started searching for gas and oil.

A first discussion will take place Wednesday in Brussels regarding a number of European Union sanctions on Turkey following a call by Cyprus for European Union solidarity after Turkish drilling activities off Cyprus.

"The drilling activities of our ship Yavuz are based on legal and legitimate grounds", the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said Yavuz "will operate on behalf of the Turkish Cypriots within the license areas granted by Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to the Turkish Petroleum in 2011".

Cyprus is divided between the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus and a breakaway state set up after the 1974 Turkish occupation, following a coup sponsored by the military government then ruling Greece. The Republic of Cyprus in the south of the island is a member state of the European Union, while the north of the island is controlled by the Turkish Republic of Cyprus which is only recognised by Turkey. Turkish Cypriots claim most of seven blocks in the east. "The United States remains deeply concerned by Turkey's repeated attempts to conduct drilling operations in the waters off Cyprus", the State Department said in a statement earlier this week.

Cyprus, a member of the European Union, has discovered natural gas in areas off the southern coast of the disputed island, though nothing has been extracted.

The EU said Monday the latest move by Turkey was an "unacceptable escalation", having warned Ankara to stop its "illegal" activities or face sanctions.

The U.S. State Department on Tuesday urged Turkish authorities to halt energy drilling operations off the Cypriot coast in the Mediterranean, a day after Cyprus protested a Turkish ship dropping anchor there.
