Tommy Robinson Sentenced to Nine Months in Prison

Tommy Robinson

Those images, according to Reuters, had revealed the identities of defendants accused of sexually exploiting young girls, while jurors were still weighing the outcome of their case.

He had been found to have committed contempt of court in a retrial by Dame Victoria Sharp and Mr Justice Warby at the Old Bailey, for filming and livestreaming the defendants in a child grooming case in 2018.

The activist's Telegram account slammed the court's ruling and called on his supporters to protest it.

British far-right activist Tommy Robinson - real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon - has been sentenced to nine months in jail over live broadcasting outside a rape trial past year.

The crowd marched towards the Old Bailey chanting "we want Tommy out" before some began pelting police with bottles and cans.

He also streamed the footage from outside Leeds Crown Court to Facebook to more than 250,000 viewers, which was in breach of a reporting ban, and the video was eventually viewed 3.4 million times.

Mr Cox said the latest sentencing "serves to illustrate how seriously the courts will take matters of contempt".

Dame Victoria Sharp said Robinson's previous time in jail had been taken into consideration, reducing his sentence to 19 weeks - of which he will serve half before being released.

Posting material online that breaches reporting restrictions or risks prejudicing legal proceedings has consequences, and I would urge everyone to think carefully about whether their social media posts could amount to contempt of court.

More than 20 killed in PNG tribal violence
Teens and pregnant women are among those murdered in a tribal bloodbath in Papua Recent Guinea's Highlands home. Hela provincial administrator William Bando told AFP on Wednesday that the death toll could rise.

He was sentenced on Thursday.

Throughout the Old Bailey hearing last Thursday and Friday, Robinson denied any wrongdoing, saying he did not believe he was breaching reporting restrictions and only referred to information that was already in the public domain.

Outside court, his supporters gathered at a double-decker bus blocking the street at the the Ludgate Hill end.

Robinson, 36, from Luton, Bedfordshire, broadcast the footage while the jury in the second of a series of linked grooming trials was considering its verdict.

His online publication of details about the criminal case involved a breach of a reporting restriction order imposed under s4 (2) of the Contempt of Court Act 1981.

The Court of Appeal, however, ordered a rehearing and Attorney General Geoffrey Cox, the government's chief legal adviser, chose to start contempt proceedings against him.

Robinson was originally jailed for 13 months on the day of the Facebook broadcast, but was released two months into his sentence after winning an appeal.

Robinson made the request during an interview with right-wing conspiracy theory channel InfoWars, telling the website he felt like he was "two days away from being sentenced to death in the UK".
