Ross Perot Dies at 89 :: Politics :: Features :: Ross Perot

Ross Perot

He retired as CEO in 2000 and was succeeded by his son, Ross Perot Jr. The Texas billionaire will be remembered for challenging the US political system by running for president twice as an independent.

I've long held that, while Mr. Perot's bid for the Presidency was honest and his love for this country genuine, he unwittingly gave us the Clinton Presidency. After his unsuccessful lobbying efforts, Perot chose to run for president, launching historical changes in third party politics.

Aside from business and politics, Perot advocated for American POWs in Vietnam, financed a rescue mission in Iran when two of his employees were imprisoned after a contract dispute, and engaged in various humanitarian projects.

Perot's first civilian job was a salesman for IBM. In 1962, he founded Electronic Data System, a data processing service that helped other companies manage computer networks.

The museum is a testament to Perot learning the art of business from his father, Gabriel Ross Perot, a cotton broker, and learning about compassion and philanthropy from his mother, Lulu May.

In his autobiography, Ross Perot: My Life & the Principles for Success, Perot reflected on getting several pairs of shoes and a dozen sets of underwear after being sworn into the academy on his 19th birthday. "Perot, we will do everything we can.' He said, 'I didn't ask you if you would do everything that you can, I asked you if you will make it?' And I immediately said, 'Yes sir, Mr Perot, we will make it". The third-party candidate instead concentrated on themes of trade, the budget deficit and corruption, appealing to layers of the middle class and to workers anxious over the loss of good-paying jobs.

Trump touts environmental leadership in speech
He wrote: "American voters aren't fooled by the President's attempts to cover up his failed environmental record". He highlighted acts of environmental stewardship his administration has taken to improve the environment.

Like Trump, Perot was not at all afraid to say exactly what he was thinking. Here he is on CBS's Face the Nation.

The Perot family collectively owns almost $59 million worth of residential property in the Dallas area. And they don't like it, and they shouldn't. The Dallas News quoted a friend who called Perot "a Boy Scout who knows how to street-fight". His opponents were incumbent Republican George H.W. Bush and Democrat and two-time Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton.

His deft use of half-hour infomercials about himself and his candidacy proved popular, as were his memorable debate appearances alongside Clinton and Bush in 1992.

PEROT: Pay a dollar an hour for your labor. He famously predicted the NAFTA trade agreement would cause a "giant sucking sound" as jobs left the country for Mexico.

Favorability climbed to 52 percent within three months, at which time Perot dropped out of the race. Perot returned to the campaign in the fall.

His unconventional candidacy, announced on a USA talk show, straddled the line between entertainment and politics and contributed to the defeat of incumbent Republican President George HW Bush. Flowers was big news, but Perot was, in the minds that mattered at the time, even bigger than Clintons lecherous behaviors. Perot was a true self-made businessman and was successful despite many business tribulations.
