Mexico finance minister quits over Lopez Obrador 'disagreements'

USDMXN: Peso Falls as Mexico’s Finance Minister Suddenly Resigns

Mexican Finance Minister Carlos Urzua, a moderate and widely respected figure, resigned on Tuesday, citing deep differences over economic issues.

Investors have anxious about Lopez Obrador's policy direction since he cancelled a major airport project before taking office, and the government has clashed with businesses on a number of occasions.

Urzua has been finance minister since Obrador was elected in December 2018.

"There have been many discrepancies in economic matters", Urzua wrote on a Twitter post, adding that decisions by Lopez Obrador's government on matters of public administration have lacked substance.

Following the news, the stock market in Latin America's second-largest economy closed with a loss of 1.77 per cent, while the peso fell 1.36 per cent against the U.S. dollar.

"I am convinced that any economic policy must be implemented based on evidence, being careful about the various effects that it may have and free of all extremism, be it right-wing or left-wing", Urzua said. Urzua's departure doesn't seem to put the recent USMCA trade deal at risk, but does highlight concerns about policy decision making in AMLO's administration. He also referred to "extremism" in economic policy and conflicts of interest in the appointment of some ministry officials imposed on him by influential members of the government.

"It is precisely in the area of inequalities where we have to work", said Herrera.
