Here's the SUV that Volkswagen will build instead of the Beetle

Car and Driver 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition rear

While the third-generation model wasn't very popular, Volkswagen sold almost five million Beetles in the United States.

German auto giant Volkswagen launched the final edition of its iconic "Beetle" vehicle from its Mexican factory in Puebla on Wednesday.

The last 65 models of the "Beetle Final Edition" will be sold in Mexico on the internet for a base price of $21,000, and can be reserved with a $1,000 payment.

The car's original design - a rounded silhouette with seating for four or five, almost vertical windshield and the air-cooled engine in the rear - can be traced back to Austrian engineer Ferdinand Porsche, who was hired to fulfill Adolf Hitler's project for a "people's car" that would spread auto ownership the way the Ford Model T had in the U.S. Porsche designed the vehicle at the behest of Adolf Hitler but the Volkswagen auto didn't enter full production until after World War II. Volkswagen has yet to say what the new SUV will be but they did mention that it will slot below the Tiguan.

Robust, easy to maintain and high-performance, it reached its apogee in the 1960s and 70s before its popularity waned and Volkswagen ceased European production in 1978. But the Beetle wasn't dead yet. However, production continued in Mexico from 1967 through 2003. While it has more similarities to a modern Golf, the retro-inspired design and the funky-looking interior was able to attract new and existing buyers of the Beetle. In 2012, the Beetle's design was made a bit sleeker.

Soon after the second war to end all wars, the factory in Wolfsburg transitioned to civilian Beetle production in 1947.

At this stage it's not looking likely that Volkswagen will ever produce another vehicle called the Beetle, although there were rumours circulating a few years back, of a possible electric successor.

The VW Beetle is undoubtedly an iconic, and historic vehicle, having been part of a never-realized Nazi prestige project.

The last of 5,961 Final Edition versions of the Beetle is headed for a museum after ceremonies in Puebla on July 10 to mark the end of production.
