Denise Nickerson, Violet in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, dies at 62

'Willy Wonka' Actress Denise Nickerson Stopping Treatment in Hospital

Nickerson, who is 62, is best known for her role as Violet Beauregarde in the 1972 version of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

She suffered a stroke past year, and returned to the hospital on Tuesday after suffering seizures.

"She's had seizures this morning and is in pulmonary and respiratory distress".

A GoFundMe page set up by her family revealed that Nickerson had a "severe stroke" in June 2018.

"She's gone", was the message in a Facebook post early Thursday by her son Josh and his wife, Jasmine. Furthermore, they stated that her lungs and brain activity are too weak.

She went into semi-retirement as an actress at the age of 21, acting sporadically and working in doctor's offices as a receptionist and an accountant. As it stood earlier today, she had too much Carbon dioxide in her blood and she's in nearly a coma-like state.

Denise Nickerson had been at home on Monday and, according to her family, took as much of her medication as she could.

Besides her role as Violet in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Denise appeared in several movies and TV shows.

Denise played Violet in the popular film, who notoriously turned into a giant blueberry. In 1978 she left the entertainment industry and became a qualified nurse.

The actress was just 13 when she got her big break opposite Gene Wilder, though she told PEOPLE in August 2016 she didn't actually meet the star until he was in character.

Born in New York City in 1957, Nickerson's first TV roles were on the gothic United States soap opera Dark Shadows as Amy Jennings and Nora Collins.
