AT&T expands Call Protect service to automatically block fraud calls

Robocalls

Great news for new and existing AT&T customers, as the USA carrier has just announced its Call Protect service will be "upgraded" to include the ability to automatically block fraud calls and suspected spam-call alerts.

AT&T customers could soon be free of having to deal with annoying spam calls - or at least that's AT&T's plan. Under the declaratory ruling, carriers are allowed to make automatic spam call blocking an opt-out feature, meaning it is turned on by default and customers will need to opt out of receiving it rather than being required to opt in. Customers will get a text message when the service is added.

AT&T's announcement comes after the FCC ruled in June that companies would be allowed to offer those kinds of services to customers automatically.

Spam calls can not only be irritating, but often they are illegal scams. Following the new rule, AT&T has now announced that it will enable Call Protect Service by default and block robocalls "in the coming months". "AT&T remains committed to working with our government and industry partners in the ongoing battle against unwanted and illegal robocalls". If you don't want to wait, AT&T says you can download the AT&T Call Protect app or enable Call Protect in the myAT&T account settings.

'Stranger Things' Monopoly game available for pre-order
Of course if you haven't seen Stranger Things 3 yet, you should know that the entire thing is a spoiler for the Season 3 finale. Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp believes his character Will Byers's sexuality is "up to the audience's interpretation".

Call Protect has been available since 2016 but only if customers opted in to it.

AT&T said suspected spam alerts have already been added to some lines, but the blocking service will also be added to those lines automatically.

Other carriers offer similar options, though AT&T is so far the only to automatically block calls. Verizon's Call Filter service must also be activated before users can find out if a call is likely coming from a spammer.

In advance of tomorrow's Federal Communications Commission annual summit, which this year will focus on the SHAKEN/STIR protocols and their use to combat robocalling, AT&T has said it will add automatic robocall-blocking technology to its customers' accounts.
