Pompeo talks building coalition against Iran

The Latest: Another US warship in Mideast amid Iran tensions

Pompeo did not discuss last year's murder of US-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi when he met with Saudi Arabia's king on Monday, the senior State Department official said.

"During their meeting, Mr Pompeo and King Salman discussed the need to promote maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz", the shipping lane where six tankers have been attacked. He was meeting with his Russian and Israel counterparts in a first-of-its-kind trilateral security summit in Jerusalem that was focused on Iranian involvement in regional conflicts, particularly in neighboring Syria.

In a joint statement, the United States, Britain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates renewed concern about Iran including over alleged attacks on oil tankers but held out hope for talks.

"It is incumbent on them to compensate what we have lost as a result of the USA withdrawal from the nuclear deal".

Majid Takht Ravanchi says the Trump administration's decision to impose new sanctions Monday on the Islamic Republic is another indication of US hostility against the Iranian people and its leaders.

Iran's U.N. ambassador is calling the current situation "very dangerous" and says the United States should de-escalate tensions by stopping "its military adventurism" in the region, withdrawing its "naval armada" and moving away from "economic warfare against the Iranian people".

Later Tuesday, Rouhani spoke by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron and told him: "If the Americans again want to violate the waters and airspace of Iran, Iran's armed forces are assigned to confront them and will take a strong approach", according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

When asked if the Europeans had threatened a sanctions snapback if Iran breaches the cap on its stock of low-enriched uranium, Ravanchi said: "Our discussions with our European colleagues are ongoing, we discussed a number of issues, but. we can not accept any intimidation or any threat from anybody".

Trump last week ordered but then cancelled a military strike on Iran, saying the response would not be proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.

It did not provide details on how the airport was attacked, but Iran-aligned Huthi rebels have repeatedly struck the civilian facility this month with drones and missiles.

Mike Pompeo traveled from Washington to Saudi Arabia on Sunday to begin a set of hastily arranged meetings created to push back against what he calls the world's largest state sponsor of terror.
