US submits extradition request for Assange

US officially requests extradition of Julian Assange – reports

The United States will detail all the charges against Mr Assange when it seeks his extradition in a London court on Friday, the editor of the whistleblowers' website said on Tuesday.

Mr. Assange, 47, was arrested by British police in London on April 11 in relation to a provisional extradition request from the USA, starting a 65-day window for the Justice Department to make it case for taking custody of the Australian-born WikiLeaks founder. Assange was arrested on April 11 at the Ecuadoran Embassy in London.

A department spokesperson told The Washington Times that the US submitted its request to the United Kingdom government for the extradition of Mr. Assange ahead of a deadline this week to do so.

After Assange's arrest by London police, USA prosecutors unsealed a year-old indictment charging Assange with a single count of computer intrusion in connection with the publication of the secret documents.

An investigation has been reopened into an allegation of rape in Sweden, which Assange has always denied. But last month, they upped the ante, accusing Assange in a new 18-count superseding indictment of violating the 1917 Espionage Act by distributing classified information.

Mr. Assange's extradition case is expected to last several months, and in the meantime his health has deteriorated.

The Australian-born computer programmer and activist is being sought to face charges in federal court in Northern Virginia that he worked with former Army specialist Chelsea Manning to unlawfully obtain and publish hundreds of thousands of reports about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as conditions within the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

USA authorities allege the whistleblower conspired with Manning, 31, "with reason to believe that the information was to be used to the injury of the United States or the advantage of a foreign nation".

Manning was freed from prison in 2017 after her sentence was reduced by then-President Barack Obama.

Mr. Assange is serving a 50-week jail sentence in Britain for skipping bail in 2012 when he faced extradition to Sweden in a case involving allegations of sexual assault. Mr. Hrafnsson said Mr. Assange had been transferred to the prison hospital and it's unclear whether he will be able to attend Friday's hearing.

The US has accused Mr Assange of violating the US Espionage Act by publishing military and diplomatic files in 2010. The law has been used rarely and never against a journalist. I doubt it, ' Mr Hrafnsson said. Ai Weiwei will be joined by Assange's father, Richard Assange.

'It's part of the same systemic attack on investigative journalism when it comes to reporting on national security issues, ' Mr Hrafnsson was quoted in Financial Review.
