Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway should be fired over political comments

White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway attends working lunch with governors at the White House in Washington

A government watchdog agency recommended Thursday that Kellyanne Conway, a top aide to President Donald Trump, be removed from federal office for repeated violations of the Hatch Act, which prohibits government employees from engaging in certain political activity.

The OSC's letter called Conway a "repeat offender" of the act and follows its March 2018 report that found she violated the law in two separate television interviews by advocating against then-Democratic Alabama Senate candidate Doug Jones.

"Under the statute, OSC makes a finding, but with many senior White House officials and Cabinet Secretaries, it is up to the President to take appropriate disciplinary action, and we respect his authority", the spokesman, Zachary Kurz, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

"Its decisions seem to be influenced by media pressure and liberal organisations - and perhaps OSC should be mindful of its own mandate to act in a fair, impartial, non-political manner, and not misinterpret or weaponise the Hatch Act", Groves said in a statement.

ABC reported that Henry Kerner, of the OSC, claimed, "Ms. Conway's disregard for the restrictions the Hatch Act places on on (sic) executive branch employees is unacceptable".

Conway has repeatedly violated the Hatch Act and other federal ethics rules, yet has faced no punishment.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway is, apparently, in no mood to discuss her alleged violations of the Hatch Act.

In that interview, Conway also addressed those who said she was being too political.

"The OSC has stepped up and made crystal clear the inappropriate nature of a White House employee defying the law in plain sight", said Lisa Gilbert, vice president of legislative affairs for the group, in a statement.

"Ms Conway's actions and statements stand in stark contrast to the culture of compliance promised by your White House Counsel and undermine your efforts to create and enforce such a culture".

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, CREW, which filed complaints with the OSC about Conway's conduct said "Conway's repeated violations and publicly expressed disdain for the law show a risky disregard for governmental ethics, the rule of law and the long-held understanding that government officials should not use their official positions to advance partisan politics".

The White House was quick to rebuke the OSC letter today, however. In fact, she started ignoring federal ethics laws nearly immediately after arriving at the White House, and kept ignoring the Hatch Act in the months that followed. He said the office's approach to Mrs. Conway's Twitter account, which she had before joining the White House, strikes at free speech.

"Never has OSC had to issue multiple reports to the President concerning Hatch Act violations by the same individual", Kerner wrote.

But federal ethics laws restrict the political activities of federal employees, which means Conway may have technically been crossing a legal line. 'Let me know when the jail sentence starts'. And on and on it goes. What's different about Trump - and Conway - is that this is a President who has been running for a second term, openly and actively, since nearly the second he was sworn in as president.
