Longtime Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen died on Thursday night after a years-long battle with Alzheimer's disease, his family announced. He served as the team's CEO until 2014, when he stepped down from day-to-day operations after announcing he was fighting Alzheimer's, a disease his wife, Annabel, was diagnosed with a year ago.
When the Broncos made their Super Bowl run in 1997, Bowlen coined the phrase "This one's for John!" which he used repeatedly in discussing the victory for then-QB John Elway, who spent the majority of his career fighting to earn a title and finally got two of them on the back end.
"Pat's legacy and impact on the Broncos and the community of Denver will not only be remembered for his team's success on the field, but for the lives he has touched along the way".
Pat Bowlen will obviously be revered as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the only unfortunate aspect of that is that it will now be posthumously.
"More important than being an incredible owner, Pat Bowlen was an incredible human being". He was also an extraordinary leader at the league level during a key period of growth. He also served on multiple other committees, including: NFL Films, Compensation, Pro Football Hall of Fame, NFL Network, Finance, and worldwide and Workplace Diversity. He preferred to be in the background and put every resource toward winning Super Bowls. He gave this team everything we needed to be the best and compete for championships, and the focus was always on football.
Bowlen also became one of the NFL's most powerful owners during his tenure. Pat was a great listener, always asking what was going on, and I learned so much from watching him. Beyond the strong passion he had for his football team, he cared deeply about his community, and he left an indelible mark on his beloved city of Denver. "On behalf of the Atlanta Falcons organization and my family, our condolences go out to his wife Annabel, the entire Bowlen family, and the Broncos organization". He implemented and established the culture of winning we all know and love, and did anything and everything in his power to make this team and the league he was part of better.
