Apple may end up buying Intel's modem business

Intel’s 5G modem

Apple's had difficulties navigating its relationship with several chipmakers, reportedly causing it to delay the development of a 5G iPhone.Following a legal dispute with Qualcomm that started in 2017, Apple turned to Intel to produce its smartphone modems.

Apple is still looking into the possibility of acquiring Intel's Germany-based modem business, The Information claimed yesterday, citing sources familiar with Apple's plans.

Should a deal be reached, Apple would likely bring in hundreds of modem engineers, and of course important (and valuable) technology and IP. Recent reports suggest that the firm might not have a 5G modem ready for its iPhones until late 2024 or early 2025. Intel acquired the modem activities in 2011 from Infineon to help grow its own smartphone business. "We have received significant interest in the business but have nothing more to say at this time".

"We have hired outside advisers to help us assess strategic options for our wireless 5G phone business", Intel said in a statement. The goal would be for Apple to develop 5G modems in-house.

The Cupertino-based company has made its own processors for the iPhone and iPad since 2010, while in 2017, it announced it planned to stop including United Kingdom chip manufacturer Imagination Technologies' graphics technology in favour of an alternative developed in-house.

Vatican rejects people choosing, changing genders
It's a sign that the church is not changing, and it's most hard for LBGT Catholics who are still committed to their faith. A democratic State can not impose a single current of thinking on gender, the Vatican said in a statement on Monday.

A year ago it bought UK-based power management chip firm Dialog Semiconductor in a deal that involved patents, staff and products and it is speculated that any deal with Intel would be similar. September 2019 is when the new iPhones will be launched.

Apple has been negotiating with Intel since past year, but The Information warns that negotiations may still be fruitless.

But it seems that Apple was never really happy with Intel. But Intel was not able meet design deadlines. Last July for example it was reported that Apple was considering moving away from using Intel's 5G modems in future iPhones.

Intel's modem business is spread across the globe. For Apple that is interesting because the American iPhone maker can build his own chips and modems faster and is therefore less dependent on 3rd parties.
