Vatican rejects people choosing, changing genders

Pope Francis celebrated the Pentecost Mass in St. Peter’s Square Sunday

"By ignoring recent scientific understandings of gender identity, and by refusing to prefer in dialogue with LGBT of us about their lived experiences of self-determining and religion, the Vatican remains at nighttime ages, selling a unsuitable teaching that depends on delusion, rumor, and falsehoods." writes Francis DeBernardo, the manager director of New Ways Ministry, an advocacy neighborhood for LGBTQ Catholics.

Millions of people around the world are celebrating the start of LGBT Pride Month, which commemorates the Stonewall gay riots of 1969, with events held to recognise the impact lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and others with a non-traditional sexual orientation have had.

The document, which is intended as a teaching tool for clergy, parents and teachers, calls for a new alliance among families, schools and society to offer a "positive and prudent sexual education" in Catholic schools so children learn the "full original truth of masculinity and femininity". Francis has expressed an interest in outreach to LGBT followers, but he has also taken a clear stance on gender identity, decrying the idea that children are taught in schools that "everyone can choose his or her sex".

The document did not add anything to the Church's position on transgender issues and observers noted that the text looks to rely on previous papal pronouncements, along with Vatican documents.

The document was issued by the Congregation for Catholic Education, which oversees Catholic education policy, as a guide for Catholic schools on how to approach answering questions from pupils about gender identity.

"We should welcome the congregation's call to dialogue and listening on gender and I hope that conversation will now begin", he said.

It describes an "educational crisis" around gender and criticises the view that gender and sexuality can be "fluid", saying such theories are "founded on a confused concept of freedom".

It's a sign that the church is not changing, and it's most hard for LBGT Catholics who are still committed to their faith.

A democratic State can not impose a single current of thinking on gender, the Vatican said in a statement on Monday.

Quoting Amoris laetitia, the document says that, among other things, this ideology "leads to educational programmes and legislative enactments that promote a personal identity and emotional intimacy radically separated from the biological difference between male and female". "There is a place of welcome for everyone in the Catholic Church". It rejected terms such as "intersex" and "transgender" and said the goal of the biological "complementarity" of the male and female sex organs was to ensure procreation.

Asked if it would cause upset, Ms Philips said that for the majority of the LBGTQ community it speaks to what they expect, as there have been similar statements before from the Vatican.
