TBI confirms identity of man killed in task force shooting in Memphis

A squad car damaged in the protests

Memphis police say 25 officers were injured and three people were arrested at the scene of a fatal police shooting.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, agents attempted to arrest the suspect -who reportedly had multiple felony warrants-- but the man entered a auto and began ramming police vehicles indiscriminately before exiting with a weapon. He allegedly rammed his auto multiple times into the officers' vehicles and then got out, holding a weapon. "The officers fired, striking and killing the individual. No officers were injured". Family members confirmed to the Daily Memphian that 21-year-old Webber died.

"Let me be clear, the aggression shown towards our officers and deputies tonight was unwarranted", Strickland said in his statement.

One local official identified the victim as Brandon Webber and said he was shot several times in his family's front yard.

The Memphis Police Department clarified that none of its officers were involved in this confrontation.

The suspect rammed into the marshals' auto and then displayed a weapon, Keli McAlister, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said in a news conference early Thursday.

Alorea Hardwick, the mother of his toddler son, was reportedly in labor in hospital when Webber was killed. She claimed Webber was shot while he was in handcuffs and the police broke his neck.

The turmoil came after USA marshals shot and killed a man Wednesday night in the north Memphis neighborhood of Frayser, officials said.

"I was proud of our first responders", Strickland said.

"I'm impressed by their professionalism and incredible restraint as they endured concrete rocks being thrown at them and people spitting at them", he said in a Facebook post. We hope the family of Brandon Webber gets justice. How many times will this be ok?

"The community wants answers into tonight's incident", said state Rep. Antonio Parkinson, D, calling for "complete transparency in the investigation of tonight's officer involved shooting". Police cars and a nearby fire station were damaged, Rallings said.

The police director implored residents to wait until the TBI finishes its investigation before spreading possible misinformation about the shooting.

Passion Anderson, a 34-year old student, brought her 13-year-old son to the scene early Thursday.

Anderson said she worries about her son's safety every day. 'I fear for him all the time'.
