Ford recalls 1.2M Explorer SUVs due to potential suspension defect

Ford recalling 1.2 million Explorers for suspension issue

Ford, on Wednesday, issued four recalls for its vehicles, including more than 1.2 Ford Explorer SUVs, which have an flaw that could result in drivers losing steering control of the vehicles.

Dealers intend to remove and replace left and right-hand rear suspension toe links with a new forged toe link and align the rear suspension.

While the Explorer toe link fracture led only to a single report so far or a truck hitting a curb, the Canadian sedan recall has resulted in at least one crash involving minor injuries. The campaign affects approximately 1.2 million vehicles in the US.

Ford also announced three other smaller recalls.

In May, it announced a recall of almost 273,000 Ford Fusion and Ranger pickup trucks in North America that could roll away if the gear is not in "park" mode.

They were built between May 2010 and January 2017 at the Chicago assembly plant, the automaker said.

Ford is also recalling 123,000 Ford F-150 pickups from 2013 with 6-speed automatic transmissions that could potentially downshift into first gear unintentionally.

According to Ford, select Explorers from model years 2011-2017 are included in the safety recall. It did not have the updates necessary to prevent a potential unintended downshift into first gear or the updates necessary to ensure illumination of the malfunction indicator light in the event of an intermittent transmission output speed sensor signal.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Ford customer service at 866-436-7332.

The problem: A link in the rear suspension may crack from heavy use.

The final recall includes Ford Econoline from 2009-2016 with a 5.4 liter engine. A substandard weld may fatigue and fail, causing an elevated rate of reports of the loss of the ability to move in the subject vehicle applications. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19S20.
