David Ortiz: Former Boston Red Sox star recovering from surgery after shooting

Retired Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz outside Fenway Park in Boston Thursday

A spokeswoman for the national prosecutor's office in the Dominican Republic says a second person has been arrested in the investigation into the shooting of former Red Sox star David Ortiz.

Dominican authorities said Ramon Martinez Perez, known by the alias "Rolfie", was detained and being questioned, according to NBC. Witnesses rushed Garcia on Sunday night and handed him over to police.

It's unclear what charges the suspects are expected to face, but investigators are treating the case as an attempted murder.

Garcia, 25, was beaten by the crowd at Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo where Ortiz was shot.

The man accused of carrying out a hit against former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz may have also been wanted for robberies in New Jersey, according to reports. Prosecutors have said the two men on the motorcycle were seen on security camera footage talking with people in a gray Hyundai Accent and in another Hyundai on a nearby street before the shooting at a popular Santo Domingo bar on Sunday night.

"It didn't just involve two people, more people took part", Bautista told a press conference, adding that another man linked to the plot nicknamed "The Surgeon" remained at large. But his attorney, Deivi Solano, told reporters in Santo Domingo his client was a motorcycle taxi driver who was unaware he was driving the suspected gunman and had picked up the fare "in good faith".

"To the fantastic surgeons, medical team, and staff at the Abel González Clinic in the Dominican Republic, there are no words to express our gratitude for the incredible care you provided", she said. Gen. Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte, said the coordinator of the attack was offered 400,000 Dominican pesos, or about $7,800, to orchestrate the shooting. Leo Lopez, an Ortiz spokesman and family friend, said Ortiz took several steps in the hospital Tuesday. "I've been getting updates the last few days", Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who played with Ortiz from 2005 to 2008, said.

The Associated Press - citing a law enforcement official granted anonymity - reported "that officials were investigating whether Ortiz may have formed some relationship or acquaintance during a trip here that, without his knowledge, set off the chain of events leading to his shooting".
