You can see Jupiter’s moons with your binoculars today

Written on the stars Jupiter at its closest point to Earth on Tuesday and all its moons can be spotted with binoculars

Space agency NASA suggests we see the planet with its moons through binoculars or small telescopes in all their brilliance. If you own a telescope, you may also be able to make out individual cloud bands and Jupiter's characteristic Great Red Spot.

As an added treat, stargazers can catch four of Jupiter's brightest moons armed with only a pair of binoculars.

This phenomenon, known as opposition, occurs just once every 13 months and finds the gas giant reaching its closest distance to Earth.

From June 14 to 19, sky gazers can see a "beautiful line-up" of the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn, which will change each night as the Moon orbits the Earth, NASA said.

NASA added, the days between June 14 and 19, will be the best time for sky gazers to catch the most attractive celestial line-up of the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn.

"With a good pair of binoculars and a steady hand, you can get a glimpse of Jupiter's Galilean moons: Ganymede, Io, Europa and Callisto".

"They look like tiny stars "sticking" to either side of the planet". After roughly 30 minutes to an hour, your eyes become fully dark-adapted, allowing you to make out faint objects in low light. "To the naked eye, it will appear as a bright "star", but will graze along a path from east to west among the background of stars from dusk to dawn ... all night long!"

As for the next truly notable astronomical event in Toledo, you'll only have to wait until April 2024 for the Glass City - and much of OH - to experience near-total darkness during that solar eclipse.

"The easiest thing to do is look up at the southeast sky near the horizon at around 10:00 p.m., and the brightest thing you see will be Jupiter", "At around 1:00 a.m., it will be due south in the sky and it will be 17 degrees up in the sky".

If you don't have time to search the skies tonight, don't worry too much. Instead, the moon's orbit is slightly tilted, making the astronomical body align with the sun and Earth-creating conditions for a lunar or solar eclipse-just a few times a year rather than on a regular basis. It's also around the time when Jupiter is closest to Earth.

Jupiter will be in opposition-forming a straight line between the Sun, Earth, and itself-tonight.
