Uber is elevating its UberAir pilot program to include Melbourne, Australia

Dallas and Los Angeles in the U.S. will also be pilot cities. As TechCrunch reports, Uber's head of Elevate, Eric Allison, gave a presentation Tuesday about how the company expects the economics of electric helicopter services should make it cheaper than owning a vehicle, and just as cheap as ordering an Uber X within a few years.

"This, coupled with Melbourne's unique demographic and geospatial factors, and culture of innovation and technology, makes Melbourne the flawless third launch city for Uber Air", she said on Wednesday.

The big unveiling came during the Uber Elevate Summit, the company's conference happening this week in Washington DC that's all about the flying taxi service.

Uber said on Tuesday it will begin test flights of the pilotless aircraft in Melbourne and USA cities Dallas and Los Angles in 2020 before commercial operations begin in 2023.

Regional general manager for Uber in Australia, New Zealand and North Asia Susan Anderson said the move was possible because of forward-thinking Australian governments.

One of Uber's flying cars could soon be flying you across Melbourne.

The air taxis will transport people across cities for the same price as auto UberX services.

Uber Air services use drone like special aircraft that can take off and land vertically from designated hubs - called skyports - like shopping centre rooftops, and carry four passengers and a pilot.

3 takeaways from USA's record-setting win over Thailand
The World Cup comes at a time when female players across the globe are seeking better treatment, conditions and pay. While the match was never expected to be close, the defending champs showed no mercy in a dominant 13-0 win.

This is how Uber imagines its skyports will appear.

Last month, a class action lawsuit was filed against Uber, on behalf of thousands of Australian taxi and hire vehicle drivers, for allegedly operating illegally which provided the company with an unfair competitive advantage.

"India presents challenges with respect to the way we are actually able to operationalise Uber Air in the country and we had some discussions with the aviation authority and several of the state government representatives and it looks promising", added Allison.

Uber also revealed and air taxi cabin design in collaboration with French engineering group Safran.

"In the coming years, with Uber Air, we want to make it possible for people to push a button and get a flight".

"Uber Air is an initiative with the aim to create on-demand, urban aviation options via all-electric aircraft on the Uber network".

If the trial is successful, Uber plans to introduce the service to Sydney, offering flights from the CBD to the Central Coast.

"We need to prove to people that this technology can be as safe as helicopters, which regularly fly in our cities".
