Theresa May: a legacy sunk by Brexit

British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and the party's prospective parliamentary candidate Lisa Forbes talk to supporters in the run up to the Peterborough by-election

May became Britain's prime minister in 2016 after her predecessor David Cameron resigned following a referendum in which 51.9 percent of voters were in favor of leaving the European Union (EU) after more than 40 years of membership.

Nigel Farage had hoped Mike Green would become the Brexit Party's first MP after the group's victory at the European elections in May, which saw them win 29 seats just weeks after they launched.

Her time as PM has been turbulent and overshadowed with mishaps and mistakes.

In what was traditionally a Conservative-Labour seat, Labour's Lisa Forbes won with 10,484 votes to the Brexit Party's 9,801, while Theresa May's party trailed behind on 7,342 votes - a blow to her in her final days as leader.

Nominations for the Conservative leadership contest open and close on Monday, and the 313 Conservative MPs - including May - will hold the first of a series of secret ballots on Thursday.

She had said in an emotional press conference that she was sad because she has not been able to pass her Brexit deal through the parliament in three attempts.

The latest version of May's 585-page proposal, which was voted down by parliament three times, will remain on the table once she leaves.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May resigns as leader of the Conservative Party on June 7th.

Once two candidates are remaining, some 160,000 Conservative Party members across the United Kingdom will vote between the two.

The victor will be announced the week of July 22.

May formally relinquished her leadership in the private letter to her party on Friday.

Johnson cleared one hurdle on Friday after the High Court quashed a legal action brought by a citizen who accuses him of misconduct in public office for making misleading statements during the 2016 campaign about how much money Britain sends to the EU.

The selection process involves the 313 Conservative MPs whittling down the nominations to two.

Johnson is one of several contenders - including Environment Secretary Michael Gove, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Health Secretary Matt Hancock - promising to go back to Brussels and make changes to the Brexit deal.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday morning, Mr Farage said that despite the party not taking its first seat in the House of Commons, "in terms of significance" he said the result was "absolutely" bigger than what happened in the European Union elections.

May was forced to strike a deal for support with Northern Ireland's pro-Brexit Democratic Unionist Party, and since then has struggled to keep her party and its allies together.

Mrs May spent her last day as Tory leader in her Maidenhead constituency, with the Peterborough by-election defeat a stark illustration of the difficulties she has faced and which will now trouble her successor.

"I am now ahead of Boris and the other candidates", Mr Stewart said.

"Obviously there is some very important business to then continue for the new prime minister, not least the Brexit process", Antony Phillipson, the UK's North American trade commissioner and consul general, told Cheddar in an interview Friday.

Hardline Brexiteers view it as a mechanism to prevent MPs voting to block a no-deal Brexit on October 31. As members, they are allowed to choose the candidates who will stand in local and parliamentary elections, as well as vote in leadership elections.
