One case of Ebola confirmed in Uganda

Measles is a highly contagious but preventable airborne infection

"Although there have been numerous previous alerts, this is the first confirmed case in Uganda during the Ebola outbreak on-going in neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo", WHO said.

"In preparation for a possible imported case during the current outbreak in DRC, Uganda has vaccinated almost 4,700 health workers in 165 health facilities (including in the facility where the child is being cared for); disease monitoring has been intensified; and health workers trained on recognizing symptoms of the disease", the joint statement said, using an abbreviated form of Congo's formal name. But global spread is one of the major criteria the United Nations agency considers before such a declaration.

Uganda's health ministry and the WHO sent a team to the western town of Kasese to trace likely cases and vaccinate those who might have come into contact with the patient, the statement continued. "The confirmation was made today by the #Uganda Virus Institute (UVRI)".

While health officials have focused on the far deadlier hemorrhagic Ebola virus concentrated in DRC's east, some 87,000 suspected cases of measles have been reported across the vast central African country in the first four and a half months of this year.

Congo's health ministry in a separate statement said the boy, from Mabalako, arrived on Monday at Congo's Kasindi border post.

Officials from the two countries will meet on Wednesday about the possibility of sending the family back to Beni in Congo for treatment, the health ministry said. World Health Organization has advised against travel restrictions.

The outbreak is both the second largest and second deadliest Ebola outbreak in history.

The effort to contain it has been severely hampered by ongoing conflict in North Kivu that has sown distrust between outside organizations, such as the WHO and United Nations, and locals wary of interference in their affairs.

"The spread of Ebola across the global border is a clear signal that the worldwide community must reset and redouble its efforts" in fighting the disease, the worldwide Rescue Committee said in a statement calling itself "extremely alarmed".
