Three Britons die after light aircraft crashes near Dubai International Airport

Deadly plane crash brings world's busiest airport to halt

The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority said all four people on board, three British citizens and one South African, were killed in the crash that took place 5km south of the airport, which is home to long-haul carrier Emirates.

Three UK citizens and one South African died, it added in a statement.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are working closely with the Emirati authorities following reports of a small aircraft crash in Dubai".

The four-seater Diamond DA42, registered in the United Kingdom, had been involved in upgrading a runway and was used to "calibrate the approach systems", the airport said. It added that the aircraft was British registered, and was on a mission to calibrate terrestrial navigation systems at the airport.

Flight Calibrations Service announced in November it signed a contract at Dubai International Airport to do work on its "navaids", beacons surrounding an airport that help pilots know where runways are and how to land.

Four people have been killed after a plane owned by a Shoreham-based company crashed in Dubai, the BBC has reported.

Dubai International is now operating as a reduced capacity due to works on one of its runways.

Flights were delayed and diverted as the airport - one of the world's busiest, based on global passenger traffic - was closed for 45 minutes.

All 300 passengers and crew survived, with 30 taken to hospital mostly with minor injuries or for precautionary check-ups.

The victims include three United Kingdom nationals and a South African, GCAA said in a statement.
