On Wednesday, army generals and protest leaders were expected to decide on the make-up of a new body to govern Sudan for three years, following the ouster of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir last month.

Sudan's military rulers have suspended talks with protest leaders to form a transitional body as they demanded protesters dismantle barricades set up around the capital, Khartoum.

The issue has kept thousands of protesters camped outside army headquarters around the clock ever since Bashir's overthrow.

After the military ousted al-Bashir and took over the country, the protesters remained on the streets, demanding that the ruling generals hand over power to civilians right away.

Burhan said transportation arteries around Khartoum had been blocked and there was "infiltration of armed elements among demonstrators who were shooting at security forces".

A Reuters witness and Sudanese witnesses said troops in military vehicles carrying the logo of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fired extensively as they tried to clear demonstrators on al-Mek Nimir Avenue in central Khartoum, near the Foreign Ministry.

Yesterday, Khalid Omar, leading member of the AFC called the accusation by the military council (TMC) that the violence was perpetrated by "infiltrators" "a return to the strategy used by the old regime".

Security forces were seen chasing protesters in downtown Khartoum and removing some roadblocks, an AFP correspondent said.

"The decision for security forces to escalate the use of force. led directly to the unacceptable violence later in the day" that got out of control, it said.

Still to be negotiated between Sudan's generals and protest leaders is the thorniest question of all: Who will head the proposed 11-member sovereign council, the body that will collectively function as a head of state with some far reaching powers along with ceremonial duties.

Earlier on Wednesday, protest leaders said of the ruling military council's decision to suspend talks.

The latest breakthrough came despite the talks being marred by violence that left six people dead on Monday at the sit-in outside the army headquarters.

The two sides split the difference on a timeline for Sudan's elections between the opposition's demand for a four-year transition and the military's wanting two years.

The negotiating parties also announced a compromise over the length of the transitional period on Wednesday, with both sides agreeing to a three-year interim period.

Demonstrators have vowed to continue to sit-in and march until the government is transitioned to 100 percent civilian rule.

Significantly, the two sides agreed to devote the first six months of the transitional period to resolving the three conflicts that have over the years created a series of humanitarian crises of enormous proportions.

The last time the military made concessions on the issue, they said the best they could do was to allow for equal representation.
