Judge Orders Former Soldier and WikiLeaks Source Manning Back to Jail

Chelsea Manning will go back to jail after refusing to testify to grand jury probing Wikileaks

U.S. Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning has been jailed again on civil contempt charges for refusing to cooperate with a grand jury subpoena on Thursday.

This time, Manning faces a fine of $500 a day if she continues to refuse cooperation after 30 days in jail. I would rather starve to death than to change my opinions in this regard. In calling for her release, her lawyers argued that the civil contempt of court statute used to jail her was for coercive purposes, and would not serve its objective because Manning would never testify.

Manning was subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury hearing evidence collected by prosecutors who have for years been investigating WikiLeaks, and who recently unsealed a criminal indictment against its founder, Julian Assange.

If Manning refuses to comply with the grand jury subpoena after 60 days, the fine will increase to $1,000 per day.

In her press conference before the hearing, Manning was adamant in her refusal and reiterated her opposition to the grand jury system.

Assange was indicted in April on a computer hacking charge for his role Manning's disclosure of those documents, a scheme the government called "one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States".

A spokesman for her legal team says Chelsea Manning will ask a federal court on Thursday to quash the subpoena. "We have a lawfully predicated reason for seeking her testimony and will continue to do so", Terwilliger said.

Musk says Starlink "economically viable" with around 1,000 satellites
A successful launch Wednesday would "surely put SpaceX in the lead", said Shagun Sachdeva, an analyst at Northern Sky Research. Musk, in a call with reporters, said SpaceX views 1,000 satellites as the point when Starlink becomes economically solid.

The judge, the Post said, responded by telling Manning "There's nothing dishonorable in discharging your responsibility as a USA citizen".

Manning's attorney, Moira Meltzer-Cohen, addressed the media after Manning was returned to jail, expressing her disappointment and reiterating that her client would not betray her convictions by testifying. "It is telling that the USA has always been concerned with the disclosure of those documents than their damning substance".

"The case doesn't make sense, it's very bananas", she said.

Manning was released from a military prison in Kansas in 2017, serving about seven years of what was once a 35-year prison term.

He said he hopes that while incarcerated, "Ms. Manning would reflect on the principles she says she's embracing. and whether those views are worth the price she's paying for them". Former President Barack Obama shortened her sentence before leaving office.

We "never once made this about anything other than obtaining immunized testimony in furtherance of an investigation", he said, adding that "all we want is her to truthfully answer questions as our constitutional republic requires of our citizens".

The new grand jury subpoena appears to be related to the United States prosecution of WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange, who was arrested last month and is now awaiting his extradition hearing in the UK.
