Brooks Koepka off to record-setting start at PGA Championship

Jordan Spieth gets in the hunt to complete the career Grand Slam with a first-round 69 at the PGA Championship

Florida native Koepka also became just the third golfer with multiple rounds of 63 at the majors, joining Australia's Greg Norman and Fiji's Vijay Singh.

All it took was one word for Rory McIlroy to sum up his Friday rebound at the PGA Championship.

Asked if he would be backing Woods to win, Faldo said: "No, no, no".

"And then I found my way back around, got it under par for the day, and let a couple slip away with a couple bad putts and a couple mistakes at the end". He hit 10 of 14 fairways and 13 of 18 greens but needed 31 putts. The defending champion may have shot 63 yesterday, a near-faultless display only blighted by three missed short putts that could have turned the spectacular into something borderline outlandish.

After opting to rest rather than practice on Wednesday, Tiger Woods carded a double-bogey six to start his round at Bethpage Black.

Third-ranked Koepka, a two-time US Open champion who opened with a bogey-free course-record 63, was set for a late afternoon start alongside Masters victor Tiger Woods and 2018 British Open champion Francesco Molinari, who both opened on 72 to stand nine strokes adrift. TV ratings for the final round of this year's Masters were up more than 41 percent over last year's tournament - a fact not lost on veterans like Steve Stricker, one of Woods' closest friends on tour.

"I parred both par-5s and missed a couple of eight-footers for birdie", Koepka said. He won at Bellerive in steamy St. Louis last August by two shots over a hard-charging Woods.

"No, not at all, " Woods said.

Lee dropped shots on the 11th and 12th and then double-bogeyed the 15th and 16th before gratefully starting the easier front nine with a birdie on the first. Woods has struggled with the course in the past, opening with a 74 during the 2009 U.S. Open 10 years ago.

Jordan Spieth hasn't won a golf tournament since the British Open in July of 2017.

CBS Sports golf analyst Dottie Pepper, a victor 17 times on the ladies tour, says everything changes when Tiger's roaring.

"I love playing over here", he said.

Tiger Woods' Masters victory last month, his first major win since 2008, has injected the game with a jolt that only he can.

"He played well. I mean, hit he a couple of loose tee shots that ended up in good spots, but I think that was probably the highest score he could have shot today", Woods said.

He is the ninth player to open a major with 63, and only two of them went on to win: Jack Nicklaus at Baltusrol in the 1980 U.S. Open and Raymond Floyd at Southern Hills in the 1982 PGA Championship.

"I don't know", he said. "But all I can do is do my best, I think". I'm still trying to get the strength back in my legs.
