To Prevent Dementia, Try Exercise, Not Vitamin Pills

Eat well, exercise more: New global guidelines to reduce risk of dementia

There are almost 10 million new cases every year.

More investment in dementia prevention is being urged after the global cost of caring for people with the condition reached £632bn a year.

The WHO also recommends caring for the carers of those with declining cognitive functions. The condition affects memory, learning capacity, language ability, comprehension, cognition, judgment, and calculation. Dementia results from a variety of diseases and injuries that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer disease or stroke.

If you want to save your brain, focus on keeping the rest of your body well with exercise and healthy habits rather than popping vitamin pills, new guidelines for preventing dementia advise.

"Dementia is a major cause of disability and dependency among older people".

"In the next 30 years, the number of people with dementia is expected to triple", said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The guidelines were created to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge they need to advise patients on the measures they can take to reduce their risk for cognitive decline and dementia. They also hope the guidelines will assist governments and policy makers in their efforts to design programs that encourage healthy lifestyles.

While age is the strongest known factor for decline, it is not an inevitable outcome of aging, the report found.

Key lifestyle choices such as getting regular exercise, not smoking or drinking too much, can reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline, the United Nations health agency said on Tuesday.

"Other recommendations have a less strong evidence base but may have evidence that they do not increase risk or harm and can therefore be recommended safely, although their impact on risk is less certain".

"We need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia", Ghebreyesus continued. Carrillo agrees that people should be looking to obtain nutrients through eating whole foods rather than using supplements.
