Global measles cases soar in first three months of 2019, World Health Organization says

Measles Why not vaccinating your kids can be deadly

States that have reported cases to CDC include NY, where there have been outbreaks in Brooklyn and Rockland County, New Jersey, Connecticut and MA.

It said the number of measles cases worldwide rose to 112,163 against the same period a year ago, citing provisional data. The total so far is the second-greatest number of cases reported since 2000.

"I'm obviously very concerned about the size and also acceleration of the current outbreak", said Dr. Nancy Messonier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

If the outbreaks aren't brought under control, public health experts worry that the cases in 2019 will hit a record almost two decades after measles was "eliminated" in the United States.

A sign warning people of measles in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community of Williamsburg, two days after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency in parts of Brooklyn in response to a measles outbreak, is seen in New York, U.S., April 11, 2019.

For the third week in a row, USA health officials have added dozens of new reports to the year's list of confirmed measles cases, bringing the total to 555 - already the highest number in the past five years. Despite the ongoing outbreaks in communities across the United States, measles is still considered eliminated, which means it is not being continuously transmitted in this country. Madagascar has recorded more than 100,000 cases since the fall, with more than 1,200 deaths. And the European Union is tallying about a thousand cases a month. The World Health Organization reported on Monday that global cases had risen almost four-fold in the first quarter of 2019 to 112,163 compared with the same period past year.

More American families are bringing measles home with them after traveling overseas, Cohn says.

Measles can be serious for all age groups, but it is most risky for children under 5 and adults over 70. It has not mutated to become more infectious or more unsafe, instead the answers are entirely human. "It would be a travesty for children's health if there were widespread outbreaks of diseases which can kill or permanently damage children". This can lead to convulsions and leave a child deaf or with an intellectual disability.

The CDC recommends that children get two doses of MMR vaccine, with the first dose administered at between 12 and 15 months of age and the second dose at four to six years of age. About 48,000 kids were hospitalized and about 500 people died per year.

Health officials there announced last week that in the neighborhoods affected by the outbreak, anyone who has not had been vaccinated against measles or cannot show evidence of immunity could face a $1,000 fine.

"You have to just approach people where they are and answer their questions", Messonier said.
