Child thrown from third floor Mall of America balcony

First responders give aid to a child who witnesses say was thrown from a third floor balcony in the Mall of America

The Bloomington Police Chief did not reveal the suspects name but said he was a 24-year-old man who is now in police custody. "Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge, '" Brian Johnson said.

A number of Aranda's petty misdemeanors are traffic or parking-related, but some of the charges are for more serious crimes, including his being convicted of a gross misdemeanor in 2015 for disturbing the peace with a police officer, as well as for assault of the fifth degree, with fear of bodily harm.

In a separate criminal complaint, prosecutors say he sat on a bench beside two women who were waiting for the Twin City Grill to open.

The suspect ran down to the first floor and "was located inside the mall", Potts said.

The child, who suffered "life-threatening injuries", was taken to a local hospital.

According to Potts, witnesses told police the person suspected of pushing or throwing the child 'took off running immediately after the incident'. Aranda lives in the Bloomington area, police said.

A witness said a woman screamed that her child was thrown from the balcony.

Police said Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, of Minneapolis, was being held on suspicion of attempted homicide. Police Chief Jeff Potts said he couldn't reveal details about the child's condition Saturday afternoon.

Potts said investigators don't believe Aranda knew the boy's family and do not have a motive. In that incident, he got into a physical scuffle with the manager of the restaurant, sending panicked diners fleeing, according to court records that also note Aranda at that point had been banned from Mall of America property through early July 2016.

Court records list the man's recent residences as the Salvation Army's Harbor Light Center in Minneapolis, a homeless shelter, and Pursuit Hometel, a group home on Park Avenue that serves adult men with disabilities.

Court records show Aranda was arrested on July 4, 2015, after police said he matched the description of a man throwing things off the upper level of the Mall of America to the lower level.

"Of course, our immediate concern is for the child", Potts said, adding the mother is with the child.

Additional information from witnesses indicated the 5-year-old might have been pushed or thrown, Potts said.

Police in Bloomington tweeted that a 5-year-old child suffered injuries and was being treated at a hospital Friday.
