Barr wants to investigate origins of agencies 'spying' on Trump campaign

Activists hold a rally in front of the White House in Washington to call on Attorney General William Barr to immediately release Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report U.S

The CNN anchor accused the attorney general of "playing into the president's conspiracy theories about a Deep State that he thinks is out to get him" and rejected Barr's assertion that then-candidate Trump wasn't warned that Russian Federation would attempt to infiltrate his campaign.

Barr confirmed to Shaheen that he would review the "genesis and conduct of intelligence activities directed at the Trump campaign during 2016", noting that the Justice Department inspector general's office was already looking at a substantial portion of it.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday morning, the Republican president railed against the Department of Justice inquiry into whether the Trump campaign had conspired with the Kremlin to sway the 2016 election.

Barr then told lawmakers that he would launch his own investigation into how the Justice Department opened its probe into Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation, and indicated that he already believed top officials had behaved inappropriately - and McQuade said he was preventing Congress from fulfilling its constitutional duties.

House Democrats were also pushing the "conspiracy theory" talking point on Wednesday, with Judiciary Committee chair Jerry Nadler (D-New York) contrasting it to what he said was fact of Russiagate, and Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff (D-California) calling it "another destructive blow to our democratic institutions". "Does Trump finally have his Roy Cohn?"

It seems to me that the ploy is to let the media and Congress focus their time and energy on getting the complete Mueller report, which will more than likely be stalled as long as possible by Trump's appointee, Barr.

He said he had an obligation to make sure "government power is not abused". That application was signed by Mr. Rosenstein in 2017 - something that has repeatedly angered Mr. Trump, as Mr. Rosenstein was appointed to his current post by him.

"I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal", said Barr.

He added, "So the Mueller report when they talk about obstruction, we fight back". "Even for someone who has done this job before, I would argue it's more suspicious than impressive", Lowey said, referring to Barr's first tenure as attorney general in the early 1990s.

'Because this was an illegal witch hunt and everybody knew it, and they knew it too, and they got caught'. "And what they did was treason".

She also accused Barr of doing Trump's political bidding in his testimony at the April 10 Senate hearing. The FBI had placed confidential informants in direct contact with members of the campaign, according to reports. But one of the things I want to do is pull together all the information from the various investigations that have gone on, including on the Hill and in the Department and see if there are any remaining questions to be addressed, ' he said.

Barr, appearing before a Senate panel, did not say what "spying" had taken place but seemed likely to be alluding to a surveillance warrant the Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained on a Trump associate.

"What I'm most interested in is getting started, hopefully the attorney general, he mentioned it yesterday".
