Claim Outlook.com website breach much worse than Microsoft admits

Microsoft

'We have identified that a Microsoft support agent's credentials were compromised, enabling individuals outside Microsoft to access information within your Microsoft email account, ' Microsoft's email to its users reads. A source described the attack before Microsoft released its statement, and then provided screenshots to prove it. Microsoft then confirmed to Motherboard that some email content had been accessed.

"Our data indicates that account-related information (but not the content of any e-mails) could have been viewed, but Microsoft has no indication why that information was viewed or how it may have been used", the report quoted the company as saying in its email.

The hack is apparently the effect of hackers gaining access to customer support account for Outlook.com, a tool that does give support agents full access to Outlook.com emails.

In a privacy notification posted on Reddit, Microsoft alerted customers the unauthorized access lasted from January 1 through March 28 of this year. However, Microsoft has hundreds of millions of webmail users with Outlook.com, Hotmail and MSN accounts.

Uber Plans to Go an IPO
The investment bankers handling Uber's IPO are expected to reveal a pricing range for Uber's shares later this month. Some investors are similarly bullish about Uber's future, especially as it relates to autonomous driving technology.

The breach, first reported by TechCrunch, allowed potential hackers to access people's emails and read folder names, subject lines and names of other email addresses.

A report from Motherboard and citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the hack reveals that the attackers could "gain access to any email account as long as it wasn't a corporate level account". The hack did not affect enterprise accounts, it added. In other words, the hackers aren't much interested in the email accounts per se; they just want to get their hands on those important reset-request emails so that they can boost the value of their stolen phones.

Specifically, Microsoft admitted it had sent notifications of a security breach to some users which informed them that their email content had (potentially) been read, but that this only applied to a small amount of the affected users, around 6%. Out of an abundance of caution, we also increased detection and monitoring to further protect affected accounts.
