Georgetown Students Vote To Pay For Slavery Reparations

Students on Georgetown University's campus

The capital " s Georgetown University could become the first in the United States to impose a fee to benefit the descendants of slaves sold by the institution nearly 200 years ago, local media have reported.

The money collected from the new student fee will go towards the creation of a fund that will be donated to schools and health care programs in Louisiana, where 4,000 known descendants of the 272 Georgetown slaves now reside. Those students say the $27.20 fee would generate over $400,000 a year and would "be allocated for charitable purposes directly benefiting the descendants of the GU272 and other persons once enslaved by the Maryland Jesuits".

Students at Georgetown University have approved a fund that would benefit the descendants of slaves sold by the elite Jesuit school in the 1800s.

A vote held yesterday with the participation of 57.9 percent of students at the center of higher studies showed that two thousand 541 were in favor of the so-called Reconciliation Contribution, while one thousand 304 rejected the initiative, according to the Commission of Elections of the Student Association. "We choose to do more than simply recognize the past - we resolve to change our future".

The fund would also be the first to focus on slavery reparations by a notable American institution, The New York Times reported. Critics of the proposal, however, argue that students should not have to pay for the institution's failures, thus, the fee should be optional. They went on to labor "under terrible conditions", according to a September 2016 Georgetown report that called on university leaders to demand "reparative justice" for the institution's actions.

"This student referendum provides valuable insight into student perspectives and will help guide our continued engagement with students, faculty and staff, members of the descendant community, and the Society of Jesus", he added.

As odd as it may sound that students will pay the cost for reparations, it was all their idea.

"There are many approaches that enable our community to respond to the legacies of slavery", Olson said.
